Marcus Finally Got a Rewards Card. Here's What Happened.
Claire on the day Marcus got a rewards card: what he picked, why he picked it, and what the spreadsheet said about his choice. Cards Made Simple — 2026. See full review →
It happened on a Tuesday in January. Marcus was paying for dinner — a $68 dinner at the Italian place we like — and I watched him take out his debit card, tap, and put it away without looking at me.
I said nothing. I have been saying things about this for four years. I have made spreadsheets. I have shown him the annual gap in dollars. I have explained interest rates, welcome bonuses, purchase protection, and travel insurance. He listened each time and then continued using his debit card.
Three days later he texted me: "I applied for the Sapphire Preferred. What do I do now?"
What Changed
I still don't fully know. He said he was looking at flights to visit his family and noticed the Chase travel portal. He said someone at work mentioned their welcome bonus. He said the debit card started feeling wrong at a fancy dinner.
Probably all of those. People change when the evidence accumulates, not when you present the first piece of it.
The Setup Process
He was approved instantly, which didn't surprise me — Marcus's credit score is excellent. He's never missed a payment on anything in his life. He was the ideal candidate for premium card approval; he just hadn't bothered to apply.
We set it up the same day. Auto-pay for the full statement balance — this was non-negotiable. Notification for every transaction over $50. I made him download the Chase app and show me the notifications were on.
I explained the bonus categories once. Dining and food delivery: 3x. Travel: 2x. Everything else: 1x. I made him repeat it back. He said "restaurants, travel, everything else." Close enough.
First Month Results
Marcus spent $2,847 in January. He earned 4,210 points — worth approximately $52 in travel redemptions.
He texted me: "Is $52 good?"
I told him it was $52 more than he earned in any previous January. He responded with a thumbs up emoji.
He hasn't mentioned the debit card since. He's been using the Sapphire Preferred for everything. He called me last week to ask if airport lounge access was included. (It's not on the Preferred; that's the Reserve.) He is learning.
What This Means
I told you Marcus would eventually come around. I've been telling you this for the entirety of this blog's existence. The evidence always wins. It just takes longer than it should.
If you have a Marcus in your life, I recommend patience and occasional spreadsheets. The math is always there. They'll see it when they're ready.
